Best estimates of production dates can be found in this blog's serial number coin op registry. Your Roman Head is in the 1934 range. My penny Roman Head is a close serial 356702. Flip

Thank you Flip for that information. You are always very helpful on this forum, it's much appreciated. The serial numbers on our two machines are very close indeed. I noticed that your machine does not have the casting cover plate over the reserve like mine does. Is there any way of knowing if my machine would have had one when it left the Mills factory? If I knew for sure that it came from the factory like that, I would probably leave it as I like to keep my slots as original as possible, but on the other hand, I like the look without the cover plate. Also I noticed that you have the reel strips with the horizontal wording. Does anybody reproduce them? I have two Castle Fronts that have them and would like to get them for the Roman Head too. And last, does the War Eagle in this photo look familiar?

Hi Ed - good to hear from you. Yes, that War Eagle looks familiar and sure is original. Maybe too original on that one!
My best guess would be that your Roman Head reserve cover was probably added by an operator when double jackpots fell out of favor and single jackpots were the fashion. But could have come this way from factory. Whichever, the reserve cover is an MLB part and adds value to your Roman Head so best to leave as is. Nice machine! The Mills horizontal fortune strips seem to be fairly limited run in mid-30's. I know of no one who has reproduced them. Rick Frink has the best strips and the largest selection - may be worth a call to Rick to see if he has ever done a special order or if he sees a demand to repo the horizontal fortune strips. Flip.

I have a fairly nice set of Mills gold award horizontal fortune reel strips (not for sale) that I would make available if Rick needs a set to use for reproducing.
