Mills Hi-Top Base

Postby 63mini » Fri Jan 08, 2021 5:50 pm

I have a future project that will require a replacement oak base for a Mills Hi-Top. I think the termites and slot techs had too much fun with this one. #-o Please let me know what you have. Thanks!

you can look on EBAY item number 114614967158 as I think they have 2 bases that may work for what you are looking for. check them out yourself. hope they work for you

collector1,
Thanks, I am aware of that listing. I have been in contact with the seller. It is my plan "B". I am still hoping to find an original. If not, then plan "B" may kick in. Hopefully, I won't have to go to plan "C" and hatchet out some oak scraps....

Hi 63 mini, I'm in the same situation. Your base is more manageable then mine. I've been looking for awhile and I'm going to have to re-construct something, can't find a base anywhere but if I do I will let you know. If I make my own I'll shot you a pic. Good Luck

capt7310,

You're right. I can see you have some work on your hands with that base.

I am considering removing the pieces of my base and running them through a planner and remove most of the damaged area. Then laminating new oak planks to the bottom. I think this will work, but there will still be some pocket/voids between the laminated boards, as the bug damage is pretty deep in a couple of areas. Maybe epoxy could fill those spots.

The base is no longer needed!

I was able to salvage the one that I had. Basically, I filled the rotted area with epoxy. Once that cured, I ran it through my planer and removed enough material to laminate new oak to the bottom. It turned out better then I expected. It won't win any best of show awards :-D . But, it will work just fine for home use when finished.
