Watling Rol-A-Top Back Door Paint Removal Suggestions

Postby 8ssubg23 » Thu Feb 20, 2020 3:13 pm

Hi, I recently acquired a Rol-A-Top that had been repainted by a previous owner. The paint on the backdoor and bonnet must be removed and repainted. Thus far it has been impervious to the strippers I have tried. Does anyone have a suggestion on what product or technique I couldt use to remove the layers of old paint and primer that currently caked on these parts. Any assistance or guidance would be greatly appreciated.
Respectfully, AGB

Thanks for the suggestions. I finally took the pieces to a shop and they used a media blaster to get the material off. The stripped pieces look pretty good. Now I will start doing some research on what type of product I should use to re-paint the parts. Hopefully, I can fine a product that is just as tough. I liked the texture of the paint that was originally on the machine and I've seen several pictures with a similar treatments. Any suggestions on what I should use? Also what color did Watling use on the backdoors and bonnets of the Rol-A-Tops?

Curious, did they use glass beads or a different media?

Hi Shane, I'm not sure what type of media he used, but before I left the parts with him he said he wouldn't use anything that would be too harsh, particularly on the bonnet which was aluminum. Whatever he used didn't leave any pitting or other noticable damage. Thanks again for your timely reply and advice. AGB
